Places to Go Instead of Cuba
So, Cuba’s off the travel itineraries of many Americans due to a change in the visa program that affects the vast majority of tourist travel to Cuba. We are always sad to see fewer destinations for our clients to visit…but don’t cry too long. We have ideas. While nothing can truly replace that Havana feel, we have some Plan B options if your Cuba dreams just got crushed.
For that Old-World Feel with a Latino Vibe: Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico suffered heavily under the 2017 hurricane season. But extensive rebuilding is finishing up, and many of the major luxury hotels are back and better than ever. Old Town San Juan boasts those winding alleys and old world charm that will have you stepping back in time. And you can still snag a local cigar. The best part? No visas needed here. This is US territory…no hassle required.
For a new up-and-coming destination: Cartagena, Columbia
Cartagena is hot, hot, hot this year. If you are looking for something new and fresh in the Caribbean, this city will enchant you with its charm. The authentic, warm culture of the people can’t be missed. It’s one of those places that hasn’t been spoiled yet. Off the beaten path for most travelers, this is a destination worth exploring if you’re suffering from travel been-there-done-that.
For under-cover foodies: Lisbon, Portugal
While a bit farther than Cuba, if you were craving some new, incredible food on Havana’s streets…you might like Lisbon. This city is known for its culinary scene with local restaurants tucked into the corners of the Barrio Alto (and everywhere else). You can’t go wrong with a pastel de nata for a snack on your way to explore the wine cellars just beyond Lisbon’s borders. Nearby are fairytale villages and castles brimming with seafood dishes deluxe. And should you need a beach, some of the best sit in the Algarve region of Portugal’s Southern shores.
For a new, less developed beach scene: Belize
Belize has some incredible beaches and pristine diving off one of the world’s best reef systems. But it still retains the authentic charm of a rustic beach town and not a tourist mecca. If you want something that isn’t yet “overdeveloped” while you enjoy fun in the sun, Belize could be for you.
For something you can see by boat: Barcelona
Yes, Barcelona is a busy place these days. But it’s with good reason. The art, architecture, cuisine, and playful vibe of this city makes it a great spot to explore before hopping onto your European cruise. Like Havana, you always want an extra day there before you depart. If a cruise ship is calling your name, you can definitely find one to sail off to your next adventure. Bon Voyage!
