I vividly remember the first time I took a vacation without my first child. My husband and I were going to Europe, and our six-month-old was staying with Grandma and Grandpa. It was so hard to leave. Then, it was hard to come back. Ha!
Many children and years later, I now advise couples who are nervous about traveling without their children. After lots of practice, I can confidently say there are some great reasons to take time to travel as a couple.
What? It sounds nice for the parents, but how is this benefiting the kids? Part of growing as a parent is letting your child learn things by the example you set. I would argue that more than any other generation, parents today are incredibly involved with their kids. This is great until we realize that we don’t always take time to nurture other areas and relationships in our life. Parenting can be somewhat all-encompassing. Showing your children that you prioritize your relationships outside of them helps them learn to prioritize those same relationships when they are older. It brings and teaches balance all at the same time.
Kids often love to be active. And taking active vacations with them is a blast. But for most adults, they don’t get enough rest at home. A couple’s trip is a time for rest from busy. Schedules are busy. Work is busy. Vacation as a couple means time to rest and refresh. It’s a mental reset to prioritize other things different than your everyday.
Most adults with children still at home are busy staying on top of everything that’s going on. But sometimes that means we don’t get time to think about what we’d like to do or be. An adult vacation as a couple gives you time to map out what memories you’d like to make and dream together about the future. It’s also a great time to plan your next vacation!
When was the last time you tried something new? Ate a new restaurant? Tried a new hobby? Saw a new city? Did something you’ve always wanted to do? Crossed something off your bucket list? A vacation as a couple is a great time to explore together without having to worry if an activity will work for every member of the family. Make sure your vacation as a couple includes something new to experience together.
Memories connect us through the years. Vacations provide some of the best memories we make each year. We recall those special moments and tell those stories over and over. When we see the pictures, we smile. Shared experiences connect people and help build strong relationships. When kids are involved, couples can “divide and conquer” a lot in parenting…you take softball on Saturday, and I’ll take ballet, and we’ll see each other at bedtime. An anniversary or romantic vacation means you get to do things together and make memories together.
